How much are startups paying in Madrid?

Traditionally, many companies have had opaque salaries and compensations in their job offers. It’s very frustrating for both companies and candidates in recruiting processes. “How much should I be paid?” or“How much should I pay for this position?” are some of the questions we get asked a lot.

At Circular we ask all offers to provide a salary range, so, with hundreds of startups using Circular, we have enough data to shed some light on the market. This post started out as an internal analysis, but we figured it would be useful to have it publicly available for candidates and recruiters.

There are many articles written about salaries in Spain but there is nothing specific on startups in Madrid. With this information candidates will have a clearer picture of their market value, so they can have fairer compensation, and recruiters will get a sense of where the market is going. Without further ado here are the results:

At the risk of oversimplifying, we studied and classified more than 600 data points from startups hiring in Madrid into two different experience levels: junior –ranging from 1 to 3 years of experience– and senior –from 4 to 6 years of experience–.

We analyzed the roles we currently have at Circular: Business Intelligence, Data Scientist, Product Manager, Product Designer, QA and engineering positions in Ruby/Python, Java, Node, PHP, iOS, Android, DevOps and frontend. Salaries are gross annual salaries in k€.

This classification is far from perfect: it’s not a comprehensive list of roles and seniority can be significantly more granular than junior vs. senior, but we believe it’s a good start and we promise to keep it updated.
